Public health and environmental considerations

Experimental biodiesel production in Eastern Macedonia on agricultural soil contaminated with heavy metals
(2006-2008)

Across the EU fundamental principles of harmonization and free movement of labor and capital have led to a common basis for health and safety legislation and also the training and mutual recognition of medical specialists and other experts in the field of occupational health. The evolving definition of occupational health includes not only the medical practitioners and occupational specialists, but also a complex group of other stakeholders, such as the employers, workers, inspection services, etc., which imposes establishment of different education and training levels and development of appropriate modern and up-to-date didactic methods. The overall goal of the project is contribution towards harmonization of occupational medicine curriculum in Eastern European countries and improvement of the occupational health knowledge transfer to other stakeholders in work and health. Development of Core Curriculum in Occupational Health
(2005-2008)

The objectives of this project are to contribute towards cleaner environment, better human health and local economic development, through experimental production of biodiesel on farmland contaminated with heavy metals. This Project is experimental production of biodiesel from crops grown on the agricultural land contaminated with heavy metals. This would achieve multiple effects: 1) soil decontamination by the method of phytoextraction; 2) protection of human health by preventing consumption of contaminated food; 3) effective utilization of the agricultural produce, that is otherwise unusable for human and livestock consumption and 4) increasing the local economic development by contributing in the farmers’ budget with biodiesel that can be used instead of petrodiesel for the agricultural equipment. Patients' Rights as a Policy Issue in Southeast Europe
(2004-2006)

In the transition societies, the issue of patients' rights has been widely discussed among the medical professionals, policy makers and general public for long time but still without consistent argumentation. The European Charter of Patients' Rights regulating the basic patients' rights currently at risk, is setting high standards for the treatment of European patients. The project Patient Rights as a Policy Issue is aimed at analysis of the patients’ rights policies and the level and quality of their implementation in different national contexts, as well as in the light of different ethnical groups, especially focusing on the Roma population, as the most disadvantaged and socially excluded, and the one suffering largest inequalities and discrimination. The Republic of Macedonia is undergoing the process of reforming the health care and public health systems, but still struggling with defining the most suitable healthcare and healthcare insurance model. Introduction of new concepts and ideas in the health care system imposes a necessity for education and training for the healthcare workers, system managers, central and local governmental officials, as well as communication of the newly introduced terminology.
